Upfirst alternative: our AI receptionist, timed beside it
Upfirst is an AI answering service a small business can set up alone. Its home page says it answers in English and more than 35 other languages and books into six calendar tools. You can even set it up by talking to an AI assistant. On features you can sign up for today, it has more than ours does.
On our two test calls it was also the slowest of the nine to answer. That is two calls to a demo number on one afternoon, and it may not be what an Upfirst customer's callers hear. It is what our caller heard, so we report it, next to our own numbers.

Timed by phone
Upfirst's demo number and ours, two calls each
Upfirst was the slowest on these calls. It gave no answer inside five seconds on the first, and its typical wait on the second was 4.6 seconds. Across the two there were five silences longer than five seconds, and the longest ran 7.5 seconds. It never talked over the caller, and our caller cut in on it once.
On October 11, 2026 we phoned each demo number twice. The caller was an AI of ours playing a new customer, and it was not told whose number it had dialled. The wait is the time from the caller's last sound to the receptionist's first sound. The typical wait is the middle value on a call. Talking over the caller means it started speaking while the caller was mid-sentence and the caller kept going.

What this test cannot tell you
These are demonstration lines. A company's demo line is not the same as a receptionist set up for a paying customer, and each demo plays a different kind of business.
Two calls is a small sample. The two typical waits beside each name show how much one line can move between calls. Treat the table as a snapshot of one afternoon, not a ranking for all time.
Speed is not the job. This measures waiting and interrupting. It says nothing about whether the answers were right, whether a booking was made or what the business received afterwards. We test those separately on our own line and we did not grade anyone else on them.
The caller was an AI. It let us ask every line the same kind of questions in the same manner. A person would have been less consistent and might have been more patient.
Our caller was not always polite either. It cut in before the line had finished speaking on four of the eighteen calls. It did so five times on one RingCentral call and three times on one My AI Front Desk call. It did so once on a Jobber call and once on an Upfirst call. On the My AI Front Desk call and the Jobber call, that is the same call where the line talked over the caller. So part of that count may be the line finishing its own sentence. We have since changed the caller to wait until the line's voice has stopped, and the next run will count again.

Which one fits your business
Upfirst is the better choice when
You want to sign up yourself and have it answering today.
Your callers speak many languages. Its site lists more than 35 besides English, and ours replies in English, French or Hindi.
You already book through Calendly, Acuity, Square or Clio. Ours books into Google Calendar.
You only want missed or after-hours calls covered, with no new system to learn.
Ours is the better fit when
The wait is what bothers you about AI on the phone. Ours answered in 1.6 and 1.9 seconds and left no wait over five seconds.
You want the receptionist to read the caller's record before it speaks.
You want callers told at the start that it is an AI and that the call is recorded.
You want the call, a summary and its tasks filed on the client's record.
What the two calls to Upfirst showed
On the first call our caller never got an answer inside five seconds. On the second, Upfirst's typical wait was 4.6 seconds. Across both there were five silences longer than five seconds, and the longest ran 7.5 seconds.
Now the other side. It never talked over the caller, and our caller cut in on it once, so the bad manners on these calls were ours. This was a public demo number, not a paying customer's setup. In our own first run, two days earlier, our measuring program was quietly dropping every wait longer than five seconds. We are in no position to be smug about anyone's stopwatch.
Where Upfirst is ahead
Almost everywhere you can tick a box. It has more languages, more calendar tools and sign-up without a sales call. It can be set up by talking to ChatGPT or Claude, and it reaches thousands of apps through Zapier.
Ours has a short list by comparison. It answers, books into Google Calendar, files the call and lets you step in. Whether a short list is a weakness depends on whether you needed the long one.
How to get the AI receptionist
The AI receptionist is part of NameCRM and is not sold on its own, because it books into the calendar, reads the caller's record and turns promises into tasks. Request access on the NameCRM page and we will set up a walkthrough.
Book the free 30-minute assessment. Seemab Akbar looks at how your business runs today and tells you plainly what to buy, what to build and what to leave alone. We come to you, meet somewhere near you, or talk online.
If the wait before each answer is the problem, ours is one. It answered in 1.6 and 1.9 seconds on our test and left no wait over five seconds. If you want to sign up yourself today, or need many languages, Upfirst does that and ours does not.
How fast does Upfirst answer a call?
We called its public demo number twice on October 11, 2026. On the first call it gave no answer inside five seconds. On the second its typical wait was 4.6 seconds. There were five silences longer than five seconds across the two. A demo number may not match a customer's own setup.
Does Upfirst support more languages than your receptionist?
Yes. Its home page says it answers in English and more than 35 other languages and switches when the caller does. Ours understands French, Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi callers as well as English, and replies aloud in French or Hindi.
Which calendars can each one book into?
Upfirst's home page lists six: Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square and Clio. Ours books straight into your Google Calendar during the call, with a Meet link or a meeting place.
Can I sign up for your receptionist the way I can for Upfirst?
No. Upfirst lets you create an account and forward your calls yourself. Ours is part of NameCRM and comes by request. You ask for access on the NameCRM page and we set up a walkthrough first.
